Types of Search Intent in SEO

Understanding search intent is one of the most important parts of SEO. Search intent simply means: “What is the user really trying to do when they search on Google?”

When you understand the intent, you can create the exact content users want which helps you rank higher and get more traffic.

There are 4 main types of search intent, and each one shows a different goal of the user.

1. Informational Intent

Users want information or answers. They are in the learning stage.

What users want:

  • To understand something
  • To get definitions
  • To learn step-by-step guides
  • To find solutions

Examples:

  • “What is SEO?”
  • “How to make coffee at home?”
  • “Why is the sky blue?”

Google usually shows blogs, videos, and definitions for informational searches.

2. Navigational Intent

Users want to go to a specific website, page, or brand.
They already know what they want, they just use Google to reach it faster.

Examples:

  • “Facebook login”
  • “YouTube homepage”
  • “Amazon customer support”

Navigational searches mainly show official website results.

3. Commercial Intent (Commercial Investigation)

Users want to buy something soon, but they are still comparing options.
They are in the research stage before buying.

Examples:

  • “Best digital marketing course online”
  • “Top 10 running shoes for men”
  • “iPhone 14 vs Samsung S22”

These users are almost ready to buy, so this intent is powerful for conversions.

4. Transactional Intent

  • Users are ready to take action, buy, sign up, download, or contact.

    Examples:

    • “Buy digital marketing course”
    • “Order pizza near me”
