Types of Ad Formats
Ad formats are the different creative styles you can use to show your ads across Google, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and other platforms. Each format is designed to attract users in a unique way — through text, images, videos, or interactive elements.
1. Text Ads
These ads use only text — no images or videos.
Where used: Google Search
Best for: Leads, website traffic
Example: A user searches “best dentist near me,” and a text ad appears at the top of Google.
2. Image Ads (Banner Ads)
Static image ads shown across websites, apps, and social media.
Where used: Google Display Network, Facebook, Instagram
Best for: Brand awareness, retargeting
Example: A clothing brand shows a banner ad of their new collection on a news website.
3. Video Ads
Short or long video ads that autoplay or play before content.
Where used: YouTube, Facebook, Instagram
Best for: Branding, product demos, storytelling
Example: A 15-second YouTube ad showing a new smartphone.
4. Carousel Ads
Multiple images or videos in a single ad that users can swipe through.
Where used: Facebook & Instagram
Best for: E-commerce, multiple-product promotions
Example: A shoe brand displays 5 different models in one carousel.
5. Slideshow Ads
Lightweight video-like ads created using images and text.
Where used: Facebook, Instagram
Best for: Slow internet areas, simple presentations
Example:
A travel agency shows 3–5 images of holiday destinations.
6. Collection Ads
A cover image/video + product grid below it.
Where used: Facebook, Instagram
Best for: Product catalogs, online shopping
Example:
A makeup brand shows a video with product tiles underneath.
7. Responsive Display Ads
Google automatically tests multiple images, headlines, and descriptions to find the best combination.
Where used: Google Display Network
Best for: Automated optimization
Example:
Google shows different ad variations based on user behavior.
8. Shopping Ads
Product ads with images, prices, ratings, and store names.
Where used: Google Shopping results
Best for: E-commerce
Example:
Searching “running shoes” shows product tiles at the top of Google.
9. App Promotion Ads
Ads designed specifically for app installs and in-app actions.
Where used: Google Play, YouTube, Display Network
